01 / OVERVIEWProject Overview

In Malaysia
The first place to learn Korean

Korean Education Center in Malaysia is an overseas education institution established in Kuala Lumpur by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea on December 30, 2020. We open Korean language classes that anyone living in Malaysia can take, support secondary schools and weekend Korean language schools that teach Korean, and guide students studying abroad in Korea, including Government Scholars (GKS).

BlueCanvas, the creator of the current website, proposed two directions for redesigning the first screen. “Cheonjiin,” which connects two countries based on the principle of the three strokes that created Hangul, and “Coral Journey,” which follows scenes where people become closer to each other. This page is a record of the considerations and process that led to the two design proposals.

02 / THE QUESTION

Korean Korean Even the letters Don't know To the person, At the training center What is the homepage What First greeting Should I give

The answer was inside the letters taught by the training center.

03 / READINGRe-reading the current homepage
ANALYSIS

The information was sufficient.
All that was needed was order.

The information that the education center needs to share, including notices, course information, adopted schools, Korean language schools, and study abroad information, is already on the website. I re-read the main screen through the eyes of a first-time visitor, and organized the sequence from the first screen to course application into three parts.

01 · FIRST SCREEN

Let the first screen
speak in one sentence

On the current main screen, pop-ups and slide banners are visible first. We have redefined the role of the first screen so that first-time visitors can understand in one sentence what the training center does.

A sentence introducing the training center is displayed on the first screen.
02 · ONE STEP

Up to course registration
at once

Signing up for a course, which is most important for visitors looking to learn Korean, is on the second level of the menu. In both designs, a button with the same name was placed at the end of the header, first screen, and course introduction.

Click “Apply for Course” once on any screen
03 · SCALE

Make the scope of the training center visible

The Institute's work reaches all corners of Malaysia, including 11 secondary schools, 8 Korean language schools, and study abroad in Korea. This range, which was introduced only with three cards on the main screen, was decided to be shown through numbers, maps, and itineraries.

Numbers · Map · 4,600 km journey

I first drew the
four people that open the homepage.

People visit the institute's website for different reasons, from citizens who want to learn Korean for the first time to Korean language teachers, students preparing to study abroad, and families of overseas Koreans. We divided the reasons why visitors came, and decided which screen each person should see first.

04 / BRAND THINKING

I found the answer
in the letters taught by the education center.

Everything the institute does starts with Hangul. So, the language of the brand was also found in the principles of how Hangul was created. The vowels of Hangul are made of dots (·), modeled after the sky, horizontal strokes (ㅡ), modeled after the ground, and vertical strokes (ㅣ), modeled after people.

THREE STROKES

One point and two lines
connect the two countries.

  1. · ㅡ ㅣheaven, earth and people

Hunminjeongeum created the basic strokes of vowels after heaven, earth, and people. All vowels that a learner of Hangul encounters for the first time come from these three strokes.

  2. ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜThree strokes come together to make a sound

Depending on where you place the three strokes, they become ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, and ㅜ, and when they meet consonants, they become letters. It resembles the work of an education center, where one person's first class expands to schools and regions, and then leads to study abroad in Korea.

  3. KUALA LUMPUR ↔ SEOULThe horizontal stroke becomes a horizontal line connecting the two cities.

If you extend the horizontal stroke that resembles the land, it becomes a horizontal line connecting Kuala Lumpur and Seoul. Cheonjiin's design proposal made this scene into a motion film for the first screen, and Coral Journey's design proposal received the first sentence, "A new world that begins with Hangul."

BRAND STATEMENT

We connect with Hangul,
and become closer through learning.

Connected by Hangeul, closer through learning.

From the education center’s slogan “Learn Korea and communicate in Hangul”Into a suggested sentence written together by the two design proposals
01 / FIRST WORD

The first sentence is easy to write.

So that even visitors who do not know Korean can understand what the training center does, the sentences on the first screen are shortened and English subtitles are included.

02 / ONE STEP

You can apply for the course all at once.

The most important action, course registration, is placed under the same name in the header, on the first screen, and at the end of the course introduction.

03 / TWO COUNTRIES

It shows both countries together.

Exchanges are expressed through scenes where the two countries appear together, such as Kuala Lumpur and Seoul, Bunga Raya and Rose of Sharon, and “Apa khabar” and “Hello.”

05 / TWO DIRECTIONS

I drew the same sentence
at two temperatures.

Proposal A Cheonjiin first screen: Golden dots in the night sky and the title: Learn about Korea and communicate in Hangul Proposal B Coral Journey first screen: arch-shaped photo and title “A New World Starting with Hangul”
A · CheonjiinStrokes of the night, speaking with letters

A golden stroke is drawn on the deep night sky to show how Hangul was created. We are the first to convey our identity as an institution that teaches Korean.

B · Coral JourneyDaytime conversation, speaking in person

It starts with scenes of people studying together, passes through first greetings and first sentences, and follows the journey leading to studying abroad in Korea.

Red hibiscus and pink Rose of Sharon on navy cloth, Korean paper with golden strokes, coral plate and ivory, coral, sage and pine color samples.
06 / COLOR SYSTEM

The gold of the night sky and
The red color of the flowers of the two countries

Cheonjiin's design proposal used gold that illuminates the strokes on navy blue like the night sky of Kuala Lumpur. The Coral Journey design proposal placed coral from the national flowers of the two countries and dark green, resembling tropical leaves, on top of the ivory of Hanji.

Red bougainvillea and pink rose of Sharon bloom side by side
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis · Bungah RayaHibiscus syriacus · Rose of Sharon
SHARED ROOT

Bungah Raya and Rose of Sharon
It is a flower of the same Rose of Sharon genus .

Malaysia's national flower Bunga Raya and Korea's national flower Rose of Sharon both belong to the genus Hibiscus. Like the red petals of Bungah Raya and the red single heart in the center of the Rose of Sharon, the red color of both flowers was transferred to coral.

Cheonjiin Design Plan included this story in a photo next to the introduction to the training center. This is to say once again the sentence that connects the two countries through colors and photos.

COLOR EXPLORATIONI thought about four palettes
OPTION 1 · TAEGEUK

I tried to enlarge the red and blue colors of the emblem.

The trustworthiness of a national institution was clear, but the screen became stiff, like a promotional material for a National Day event. The Malaysian flag also has the same red and blue, so it became unclear which country's colors it was. We decided to leave the two colors only inside the emblem.

hold
OPTION 2 · TROPICAL BRIGHT

I tried to capture the liveliness of Malaysia in primary colors.

The screen became brighter, but information that required trust, such as notices and scholarship information, seemed light. Public educational institutions have long needed calming colors.

hold
OPTION 3 · NIGHT & GOLD

A golden stroke was drawn across the night sky.

The background was reduced to a deep navy so that each stroke looked like light, and gold was used only on the strokes and buttons. Even if you write less, it is the first thing that catches your eye.

Cheonjiin
OPTION 4 · IVORY, CORAL & PINE

The red colors of flowers from both countries were placed on Hanji.

Coral and dark green were added to the ivory background to create a bright and warm daytime look. Sage and Peach are used to divide the sides of story cards.

07 / TYPOGRAPHY & LANGUAGEOne family font, greetings in three languages

Both design proposals were organized into one Pretendard family that reads both Korean and English evenly. Even if the font was the same, the thickness, letter spacing, and emphasis were set differently to create voices of night and day. The greeting strip contains Korean, Malay, and English.

The first screen of Cheonjiin Design is an 18-second motion film that plays as you scroll. One dot draws a horizontal line, and three strokes come together to form “Hangul,” and the strokes draw the Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and Namsan in Seoul, connecting the two cities with one line.

Instead of real-time 3D, pre-rendered frames are drawn based on the scroll position. On a mobile phone, the frame for the vertical screen is loaded separately, the same scene is created as a video, and played back with the “View video” button.

09 / DESIGN PROPOSALSTwo main pages

Before choosing one, I made
two directions all the way through.

Although it started from the same educational center materials and the same information, the nature of the website varies greatly depending on what is shown first. We have completed Heaven, Earth and Humankind, which focuses on the principles of Hangul, and Coral Journey, which focuses on meeting people, all the way to the end of the main page.

The screen below is a recording of the actual design draft. Clicking on the scene name takes you to that section, and the phone screen follows the same scene.

Proposal A · Cheonjiin

CHEONJIINLearn Korea and communicate in Hangul

The direction is to introduce the education center based on the principles of the three strokes that created Hangul. Starting with a motion film that plays in time with the scroll, it sequentially shows the work the institute does, Korean schools throughout Malaysia, the study abroad journey from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul, and courses from steps 1 to 6.

  • 18 seconds of motion film with 9 points connecting two cities
  • Five business cards stacked on top of each other
  • Malaysia map and 4,600 km study abroad journey
Pretendard 800 · Korean and English subtitles

In the public recording, photos of the training center event were replaced with images of similar scenes and contact information was obscured.

Proposal B · Coral Journey

CORAL JOURNEYA new world starting with Hangul

The direction is to introduce the training center through scenes of people learning together. An arch-shaped photo spreads across the screen as it scrolls, showing the sentence “Learning, closer,” followed by first greetings, first Korean, horizontal exchanges, stories about studying abroad, and recent news.

  • The first screen that expands from the arch to the entire screen
  • The first Korean card with “Hello!” written in three-dimensional letters
  • Three stories flowing horizontally: Connection · Experience · Studying in Korea
Pretendard 650 · Letter spacing -0.07em

In the public recording, photos of the training center event were replaced with images of similar scenes and contact information was obscured.
