01 / OVERVIEWProject Overview

(New) Brand’s
content hub for seniors

HANA THE NEXT is a brand created by Hana Financial Group for (New) seniors. The brand introduction states, “(New) Hana Financial Group’s unique integrated (financial & non-financial) solution for the second act of senior life.” The webzine hana1qm.com is the brand's content hub, and the Hana Financial Research Institute's HANA THE NEXT Research Center posts articles on retirement preparation, asset management, senior care, laws in daily life, and retirement life every week.

BlueCanvas is the company that created the current webzine, and this webzine has the GDWEB AWARD GOLD badge on the footer. In the meantime, with the addition of short forms, videos, expert columns, six lounges across the country, and monthly seminars, the number of stories to be featured on the front screen has increased significantly. This time, I proposed two design proposals for what kind of webzine it would be if we put down the current screen frame and draw it again from scratch. This page is a record of the process.

02 / CHALLENGEStarting point

11blocksOn a 1440px screen, the main page is six screens long (5,402px). Each block was similar in weight, so it was hard to tell between what I needed to read this week and what I wanted to read for a long time.
  1. Q1
How old is the reader, and with what eyes do they read?

The brand's target audience is between 50 and 64 years old. Although this generation has been using KakaoTalk for 16 years, most of them read the screen with eyes that have begun to experience presbyopia. Currently, the main text of the webzine is large at 20px, but the date and button text are light gray and the expert name tag is reduced to 11px.

  2. Q2
How do I retrieve an article that is still valid even after the date has passed?

Articles about when to start receiving pensions or testamentary trusts remain useful even after several months. But now, as new posts are posted, they are pushed down. Instead of dates, I needed to be able to find my way back to the curtains and themes of my life.

  3. Q3
Where should I go after reading this?

The webzine has three subscription channels, six lounges, and monthly seminars, but they are scattered throughout the home screen. I had to organize the path from reading to subscription, seminar, and consultation in one line.

  4. Q4
How does a financial group's webzine look vibrant?

The brand released NEXT as New·Energetic·Xtraordinary·Timeless. We needed an expression that would maintain the trust of a financial group but also not look like a “site for older people.”

03 / NAMERead the name again

Logo motif explanation source: HANA THE NEXT webzine “Brand introduction”

  1. 01 · HANA THE NEXT

    (New)New brand for seniors

HANA THE NEXT is a brand that will become a new growth engine for Hana Financial Group, combining financial and non-financial solutions for the second chapter of (New) seniors' lives. The webzine is where the brand meets readers every week.

  2. 02 · N = NEW

    new senior

(New)Senior refers to both existing seniors and new seniors. New seniors refer to people aged 50 to 64, including the second wave of baby boomers (born between 1964 and 1974) and some first wave baby boomers (born between 1959 and 1963).

  3. 03 · E = 三

    Three lines are three acts

The logo erased the vertical stroke of the E, leaving only three horizontal lines. This means that we will think together about every moment of life, from the first act of life to the third act of those preparing for the second act.

  4. 04 · X = ⟩

    「⟩」 hidden inside the X

The left half of the X is 「⟩」 away from the right stroke. The brand describes this symbol as the next step in life and the possibility of expansion into the future.

  5. 05 · T = TIMELESS

Time to live and time to live

The four letters of NEXT are also the first letters of New · Energetic · Xtraordinary · Timeless. The brand interpreted this as “respect for the special times we have lived and support for the vibrant life we will live in the future.”

  6. 06 · OUR READING

There is already a “Next” button inside the logo

On the screen, 「⟩」 is a button to move to the next chapter, and the three horizontal lines are the most basic dividing lines between lists and paragraphs. Rather than creating new decorations, both design ideas started by translating the two elements that the logo already had into the rules of the screen.

04 / READERreader's timeline

This is not a generation unfamiliar with digital
a generation with changed eyes

The readers defined by the brand are those born between 1959 and 1974. They went through the Seoul Olympics and the foreign exchange crisis in their teens and 30s, and were 35 to 51 years old in 2009 and 2010 when smartphones and KakaoTalk were introduced. So, the two design proposals did not portray the readers as “digitally awkward seniors.”

What has changed is the eyes. Presbyopia usually begins around age 40, and most of these readers now have more difficulty reading close text than before. The two design proposals kept the tone and screen composition youthful, but the font size and contrast, and the size of the press points were generous from the beginning.

  6. 2030Year to start receiving national pension old-age pension64year

Age is the full age for that year. Depending on the year of birth, the starting age for receiving the national pension old-age pension is 62 for those born between 1957 and 1960, 63 for those born between 1961 and 1964, 64 for those born between 1965 and 1968, and 65 for those born in 1969.

05 / READINGReading standards

Youthful vitality,
big letters

Currently, webzines display article text at 20px on a wide screen. This is thanks to the fact that the letters were enlarged from the beginning. However, the date is light gray, and the expert name tag and auxiliary text such as “Check Now” are gray and small to 11~15px.

In the renewal, we raised the standard starting with the smallest letters. The two cards below are the same article rewritten with the current webzine and new standards. If you turn on “See through the eyes of someone in your 50s,” you will see that the gray letters disappear first.

06 / STRUCTUREinformation structure

In order of date
In order of life

Currently, the webzine has seven menus: retirement/old age, asset management, senior care, legal story, life, HANA THE NEXT, and short form/video, and there are eleven topic keywords under them. The two design proposals did not erase this category, but grouped them into five topics, and then added the second axis of which stage the reader is currently in.

Even in the same inheritance story, a person in his 50s preparing for the second act needs taxes first, and a family planning the third act together needs a trust first. Select an act or topic from the table below to see the text that will be placed in that line.

Act 1Preparing for Act 2

07 / COLORColor

However, the green remains the same
the vitality is renewed

Currently, the most used chromatic color in webzine style sheets is green #009178. The logo, buttons, and category names are all in this color. The two designs kept this green color as is and divided the character into colors that match the background.

Proposal A added a tiny bit of sunlight-like yellow to white paper and dark green text, while Proposal B added mint text and amber lighting to a deep forest-colored stage. #009178 on a white background has a contrast of 3.9:1, so it was used only on the large title and button side, and the small green letters were changed to a darker green.

  • BaseThis is a white piece of paper on which the cover, article, and table of contents are placed. Instead of using cream color, I used the brand's white color.

  • Highlight side · ButtonThis is the background and button side of the expert question and subscription area. The contrast with white text is 8.3:1.

  • Information SideThis is a light mint that contains information on the table and lounge.

  • Supplementary charactersGray-green used in explanatory sentences and dates. The contrast with the white background is 7.1:1.

  • Title · BodyIt is a very dark green color used instead of black. The contrast with the white background exceeds 15:1.

  • DividerThis is the line that separates the table of contents from the list.

  • Logo/Cover ButtonThe brand green color is only used for the “⟩” button on the logo and cover.

  • Vitality PointA very small amount of yellow is used only for the star next to the title and the video progress line.

The ratio is a value obtained by taking pictures of the entire PC screen for each scene in the two designs and counting the pixels closest to each color. Clicking on a color swatch will copy the HEX value.

08 / TYPOGRAPHYtypeface

In one clear gothic style
big, bold, generous

The Korean characters in both designs were all written in one pretendard. The strokes are even and the width of the numbers is constant, so the lines do not shake even in webzines with many dates and amounts. In Proposal A, even the English label was matched with Pretendard, and in Proposal B, large numbers such as “MY NEXT ACT”, ACT number, and year of birth were paired with Archivo, which can adjust the width.

The size was determined from top to bottom starting from the text. The article title and section title are increased based on 20px of body text, and the smallest text stops at 14px.

09 / MOTIONmovement

Movement
only in the “⟩” direction

The movement of a webzine only does two things. Notifies you that you are moving on to the next chapter and that a new section is starting. The screen does not move while reading.

  • 01

    ⟩ Flip to the direction

The cover of Proposal A moves from right to left around the left corner, and in Proposal B, the “⟩” in the bottom progress indicator advances one space each time the curtain changes. The direction indicated by “⟩” in the logo is “Next.”

  • 02

    Open in three lines

The three lines of the logo mark the opening of the zone. Proposal A spreads three chapters into three horizontal lines, and Proposal B adds a three-line symbol in front of the section name. Just by looking at that sign, the reader knows that the story has changed.

  • 03

    Pause when reading

When the text is on the screen, the background and photo do not move. If you turn on “Reduce Motion” on your device, both swiping and zooming will be turned off.

Proposal A · Next chapter

THE NEXT PAGELet’s unfold the next chapter of life together

The direction is to re-imagine the webzine as a magazine with one page each week. On the first screen, there are three covers of Money, Health, and Life under the title “Let’s unfold the next chapter of life together.” If you scroll down or press “⟩,” the cover moves around the left corner like a bookshelf. Below that are three chapters that extend the three lines of the logo, topics organized like a magazine table, reading material of the week read in large letters, expert questions, short form, lounge, and subscription.

  • The first screen where you can scroll through the three covers of Money, Health, and Life using “⟩”.
  • 50s, 60s, family, article regrouped into three chapters
  • Reading screen and listen button that enlarge the text from 20px to 26px
  • If you select six lounges, the lounge area will change seminars in November.

DIRECTION NOTES

Among the scenes in Proposal A, I chose a moment that I put a lot of effort into directing. Click on the photo to see a larger view of each scene.

  1. Let's unfold the next chapter of life together

This is the first screen. Covers for Money, Health, and Life are placed under the large title, and pressing 「⟩」 on the right moves to the next cover.

  2. The next chapter of health

When you scroll down, the cover moves to the left corner and opens the second cover, “A light step changes the day.”

  3. next chapter of life

The third cover is a couple at a train window. A progress indicator below the cover tells you which of the three chapters you are on.

  4. three chapters

The three lines of the logo E were stretched to the width of the screen, and articles were placed in each line of people in their 50s preparing for Act 2, people in their 60s living in Act 2, and families designing Act 3 together.

  5. Like a magazine turn

This is the topic numbered from 01 to 06. When you hover your mouse over a topic, the left photo and featured article change.

  6. time to read slowly

This week's reading material starts at 20px and can be increased to 23px or 26px, and the article is read aloud using the “Listen” button.

  7. ask an expert

Write down your question in large letters first, and then click on it to reveal the answer. Instead of names and faces, experts were represented by roles and symbols.

  8. Even off screen

If you choose one of the six lounges, you will see that lounge's November seminar.

MY NEXT ACTLife's second act, until the next act

The three lines of the logo E represent the three acts of life, and the “⟩” inside the X is read one step forward. On the first screen, three rows of lights turn on one by one, and as you scroll down, they part like a curtain to open photos and titles. Next, the webzine asks, “Which stage are you in now?”, and if you select your birth year, the age at which you start receiving pension, your current stage, and three personalized articles will change. After that, there will be three acts, this week's content, Q&A, video, lounge and seminar, and the story of HANA THE NEXT.

  • The first screen where three lines of light turn on like stage lights and part like a curtain.
  • “Find My Act” changes your pension age, current act, and custom text by selecting your year of birth.
  • Three acts that pass ACT 1, 2, and 3 with the 「⟩」 progress indicator
  • When you select a lounge, you will see a schematic map of where that lounge's November seminar will be held.

  1. three rows of stage

On the stage with the lights off, the three lines of the logo E light up one by one, and an amber “⟩” appears on the right.

  2. When the curtain opens

As you scroll down, the three lines widen and part like a curtain, between which a photo opens of a person crossing a threshold and walking into the sunlight.

  3. Act 2 of life, until the next act

When all the photos are opened, the title and “Find My Film” button will appear.

  4. Which act are you in now?

If you select your year of birth, your age this year, the age you start receiving national pension and that year, the current curtain, and three good-to-read articles change.

  5. ACT 1 · Time to organize work

The screen changes while the screen stays fixed. A large number with only an outline left, a photo, and three articles come in one after another.

  6. ACT 3 · Long time together

The final act deals with inheritance, gifts, trusts, and nursing. The “⟩” in the progress indicator below reaches the third column.

  7. In a nearby lounge

If you select a lounge on a schematic map of four locations in Seoul, the lounge's November seminar will appear on the right.

  8. NEXT, cheers contained in four letters

In the webzine, we introduce New · Energetic · Xtraordinary · Timeless and three logo motifs written by the brand.

10 / PROCESSProcess

In four directions
in two directions

To decide what to start with as the first screen, I first compared the four directions with wireframes. Two directions became the design proposal, and the other two directions were not discarded but moved to a section within the design proposal.

  1. 01

A magazine I flip through every week

The idea is to set up “Content of the Week” on a large scale like a magazine cover, and go back and forth between last week and next week by flipping through the covers.

Proposal A developed into THE NEXT PAGE
  2. 02

    Find my membrane

When the reader selects the year of birth or current situation, the text that matches that act is shown first.

Proposal B developed into MY NEXT ACT
  3. 03

    lounge map

The plan is to place the six lounges and seminar schedule on the first screen. Since the four lounges are located in Seoul, the first screen may feel distant to readers from other regions.

    Moved to lounge area
  4. 04

    Short form feed

The direction is to prioritize short forms and videos as vertical feeds. The story of pensions and inheritance, which can only be understood through reading the text step by step, was buried between short videos.

    Move to video area
  1. 01Read the webzine again now

We organized seven menus, eleven keywords, and eleven main blocks, and measured the font size and color directly on the screen.

  2. 02Brand interpretation

We examined whether the four letters NEXT written in the brand introduction and the three design motifs of the logo could be translated into rules on the screen.

  3. 03Readers and Reading Standards

(New) Seniors' birth year and pension eligibility age have been organized, and the standards have been re-established starting from the smallest letters.

  4. 04structure

I regrouped the writing into three acts and five themes of life, and drew a path from reading to counseling.

  5. 05four-pronged sketch

Magazine · My curtain · Lounge map · Short form feed were compared in four directions using wireframes.

  6. 06Two designs

We created a main page where you can actually scroll in two directions, and we prepared new photos of the lively daily lives of people in their 50s and 60s.

  7. 07Mobile and organized

The scene was reorganized on a 390px screen, and the color, font, and movement standards were combined into one document.

It was not about aging, it was about vitality.

Nowadays, webzines use different photos and pictures as thumbnails for each article. The two design proposals presented a new daily life featuring people in their 50s and 60s, with photos to be hung on a large screen. I left out cliché scenes such as walking sticks and hospital beds, and chose scenes of organizing household chores, walking at dawn, learning to use a pottery wheel, and having dinner with family. No text or trademarks are included in the photo.
